Cha was discovered by a talent scout during a festival at his middle school and offered to cast him. Cha's training started during his first year of high school. He debuted as an actor in 2014 with a minor role in the film My Brilliant Life, starring Gang Dong-won and Song Hye-kyo. Due to his impact in the film, Cha as the rookie actor Lee Dong-min, was selected as model for Korean cosmetics brand Shara Shara. He was the fourth trainee to be officially introduced with the Fantagio i-Teen Photo Test Cut. In August 2015, Cha was cast as the lead in the web-drama To Be Continued with Kim Sae-ron.
